LIFE Sedremed at SedNet Conference 2023: Uniting Experts in the Quest for Sediment Solutions

The LIFE Sedremed team recently embarked on an exciting journey to Lisbon for the 2023 SedNet conference, a renowned gathering of international sediment management professionals and experts. Throughout the conference, the enchanting coastal city of Lisbon provided the perfect setting for groundbreaking discussions and the sharing of innovative research in sediment management.

SedNet, as the premier international network of sediment specialists, offered an ideal platform for presenting the first results of the LIFE Sedremed project. Our team was thrilled to contribute significantly to the conference’s agenda with several key presentations.

Chiara Melchiorre from Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn captivated the audience with her discussion on the preliminary decontamination results and the adaptation of our cutting-edge technologies. Her insights provided a deep dive into the scientific aspects of our project and showcased the potential of our remediation strategies.

Heinrich Eisenmann from Isodetect GmbH unveiled our innovative monitoring approach. His presentation highlighted the advanced methodologies we are employing to assess and manage contaminated sediments, marking a significant step forward in environmental monitoring techniques.

Raffaele Vaccaro offered a compelling perspective on potential policy solutions to facilitate the management of contaminated sediments. His expertise in legal and regulatory frameworks provided a comprehensive view of how policy can be shaped to support environmental initiatives like ours. He also provided key information on the full decontamination plan for Bagnoli’s coastline and how the LIFE SEDREMED findings could positively impact the foreseen dredging & capping activities.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Jos Brils, Nan Su, Chayenne V., and the rest of SEDNET collaborators for their remarkable contributions and insights, which played a pivotal role in the success of our presentations and the conference at large.

A special thanks is also due to the supporting institutions and organizations: Universidade de Lisboa, HAEDES, Câmara Municipal de Cascais, Porto de Lisboa, the European Commission, CINEA – European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency, and the LIFE Programme. Their support has been crucial in aligning our project’s objectives with broader environmental goals.

Additionally, we acknowledge the invaluable contributions of Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn, Invitalia, Università Politecnica delle Marche, Idrabel Environmental Biotechnology, EKOGRID Oy, and all other partners. Their expertise and collaboration have been essential in advancing our project.

The SedNet Conference 2023 was not just a meeting of minds but a confluence of shared ambitions for a cleaner, healthier environment. The knowledge exchange, networking opportunities, and the inspiration gathered over these days are key to enhancing the outcomes of the LIFE Sedremed project. We depart Lisbon with renewed commitment, fueled by the support and collaboration of this incredible community.
