SEDREMED at RemTech Europe 2024

RemTech Europe 2024, the International Conference and Exhibition on Land and Water Remediation Markets and Technologies, held in Ferrara, Italy, from September 16-20, 2024, provided an important platform for advancing discussions on environmental remediation related to the LIFE Sedremed project.

Among the highlights was a presentation by Emanuela Buschi, representing Sedremed partner SZN, which focused on the remediation of the Bagnoli-Coroglio site in Naples, a nationally significant area for environmental restoration. The presentation detailed the application of innovative technologies in the LIFE Sedremed project, including the use of bio-fixed microorganisms and electrified systems to accelerate the natural degradation of contaminants.

Preliminary results showed encouraging progress, with up to a  sensible reduction in certain pollutants, particularly in deeper sediment layers, within just eight months. The project’s multi-step approach, which includes comprehensive environmental monitoring, aims to adapt and replicate these technologies in other contaminated coastal areas across Europe, enhancing both efficiency and cost-effectiveness in sediment decontamination.

Additionally, Isodetect, a second LIFE Sedremed partner, represented by Anko Fischer, contributed to the event with a presentation on PFAS contamination, addressing another critical aspect of remediation science. While the presentation was not directly linked to Sedremed, the project was well-represented through a stand featuring informational materials and a roll-up banner. This ensured visibility for the project and provided attendees with insight into LIFE Sedremed and its goals.

These activities at RemTech Europe demonstrated LIFE Sedremed’s commitment to tackling environmental challenges through collaboration, further reinforcing its role as a driver of knowledge exchange in marine sediment remediation.
